Learn about best practice when working with human tissue, and how to ensure compliance with the Human Tissue Act in the research sector.

Course Description

The Human Tissue Act short online course is suitable for anyone working with human tissue in the research sector in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.  It's designed for staff and students at all levels in university, hospital and industry settings.  It can be used to train new starters, or as a refresher for existing staff.  Topics include:

  • Why do we need regulations?
  • Licensing
  • Relevant materials
  • Consent
  • Obtaining tissue for research
  • Ensuring compliance
  • Sample management: transfer, storage, use & disposal.

The course will take around 2 hours to complete.  You will be able to download a Certificate of Completion upon finishing the course.  

Newcastle University staff/students can access the training for free – please contact HTA.elearning@ncl.ac.uk to be added to the course.

If you do not have a Newcastle University email address, but do work to actively collect samples to be transferred to one of Newcastle University's NRES REC approved Research Tissue Banks, including taking consent and managing the samples in the clinic for transfer to the University, you are eligible to access the training for free.  Please contact HTA.elearning@ncl.ac.uk stating the name of the Research Tissue Bank you are working under.
