Wastewater Engineering

It provides:

  • A basic understanding of the design and operation of unit processes in the treatment of domestic and industrial wastewaters.
  • An understanding of biological principles and parameters
  • An introduction to recent developments and more advanced techniques in biological wastewater treatment
  • Knowledge of the physical, chemical and biological principles in wastewater assessment and treatment
  • Basic analytical and the latest molecular microbial ecology skills through laboratory analysis of wastewater and sludge samples

Learning Outcomes

  1. To acquire an understanding of the fundamental scientific concepts and detailed technical know-how of the technologies required for water supply and treatment for drinking and industrial purposes.
  2. To gain a general understanding of the legal and health issues associated with water supply.
  3. To understand the principles involved in the design and selection of appropriate unit processes.
  4. To be able to estimate water demand.
  5. To be able to determine free chlorine residuals for break-point chlorination and the kinetics of pathogen kill.
  6. To be able to select and design appropriate water treatment unit processes.
  7. To be able to calculate design specifications for unit processes to treat raw water of a particular quality to a particular quality.
