Metalwork Wear Analysis: An In-person Masterclass

Course Information

This three-day in-person masterclass is designed for those who have previously attended an online introductory course or have prior knowledge of Metalwork Wear Analysis (MWA). It offers an opportunity to apply and develop practical skills in identifying, evaluating, and interpreting wear traces on prehistoric copper-alloy artefacts.

Working in small groups, participants will examine objects from Newcastle University and Great North Museum's world-class collections using Leica EZ4-W stereomicroscopes. Through guided practice sessions and discussions, they will refine their ability to distinguish manufacturing marks, use-wear patterns, repair traces, and post-depositional modifications, including those related to conservation. A copy of the learning material, a reading list, and a certificate of attendance will be provided.

This masterclass is ideal for students, researchers, museum professionals, and conservators seeking to deepen their expertise in MWA and enhance their ability to work with archaeological copper-alloy artefacts.
