Reliability and Integrity Management of Marine Systems

The purposes of this module is to:

  • Introduce and develop the concepts of risk and reliability and demonstrate how these concepts relate to integrity management decisions
  • Demonstrate how hazards are assessed and quantified using industry recognised techniques of FMECA and HAZOP
  • Explain how subsea structures are maintained and inspected
  • Deliver structural reliability theory and its application to marine structures

Introduction to the concepts of risk including:

  • Quantitative
  • Semi-quantitative
  • Qualitative approaches
  • ALARP criteria
  • individual and societal risk factors

FMECA and HAZOPS:

  • Use of failure modes and effects and criticality analysis to identify system and component failure
  • Hazard and operability studies to identify hazards in offshore and subsea processes

Monitoring, Intervention and Inspection Methods:

  • The use of ROV’s, AUV’s, inspection vehicles and divers
  • Monitor and maintain the subsea system
  • Data Management:

    • The use of data management systems to maintain records
    • Inform the integrity management process

    Structural reliability theory:

    • Reliability-based limit state design of marine structures

    Learning Outcomes

    On successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

    • IKO1: The concepts of risk assessment, particularly as it relates to integrity management.
    • IKO2: Hazards related to offshore and subsea operation.
    • IKO3: The financial implications involved with assessing the maintenance strategies for offshore facilities.
    • IKO4: The appropriate inspection and intervention techniques for the threats identified.
    • IKO5: The reliability-based limit state design of marine structures.

    On successful completion of this course, students will develop the following subject specific and intellectual skills:

    • ISO1: Completing simple risk assessments and FMECA for a system.
    • ISO2 - Decision making
    • ISO3 - Communication skills
    • ISO4 - Data evaluation
