Disability Awareness – Learning Through Lived Experience

Eligibility Criteria

This programme is open to people and organisations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the following organisations:

  • NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
  • NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)
  • NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO)
  • NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
  • NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU)
  • NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN)
  • NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (HRC)

Course Information

Involved and Equal CIC provide engaging training on Disability Equality and Inclusion. The theories and models of disability are delivered by disabled people who bring their own and others Lived Experience to give a unique perspective on the subject of Disability Equality and Inclusion.

We will cover points such as What is Disability? and what it means to be disabled, to be discriminated against. The inequalities that disabled people face and how that impacts on disabled people and their families.

We will also cover the importance of positive language and communication when working with disabled people and what to think about regarding Disability Inclusion and the barriers which may exclude disabled peoples’ involvement.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the module, a learner will be able:

  • To identify the Social and Medical models of disability, evaluate the use of different models and their impact on the lives of disabled people, and recognise how the medical model perpetuates oppression and keeps disabled people in a Circle of Dependency
  • To identify barriers that disabled people face when receiving services, understand how the social model identifies how barriers affect disabled people, the impact on their lives and on the goal of inclusion within society, and recognise that many disabled people may face multiple oppression due to Intersectionality
  • To outline examples of barriers to independent living and inclusion in their own life / department / organisation and to identify and analyse appropriate solutions
