Introduction to PPIE in Research
Eligibility Criteria
This programme is open to people and organisations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the following organisations:
- NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
- NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)
- NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO)
- NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
- NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU)
- NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN)
- NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (HRC)
Course Information
The session introduces public involvement & community engagement and covers all aspects of the research cycle.
- National definitions of involvement, engagement and participation in research and the NIHR National Standards
- How to identify, approach and engage members of the public and local communities
- The Community Engagement Toolkit
- Remuneration, training and support for public contributors
- Identifying different roles for public members
- An introduction to Co-production and Peer Research
- The importance of impact, feedback and dissemination
- Where to go for further information resources, tools etc.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the module, a learner will be able to:
- Understand the PPIE landscape from the perspective of both public contributors and researchers
- Ensure that PPIE is included in all aspects of ongoing and future research opportunities
- Understand how to make PPIE meaningful and deliver real impact
