Health on the Move - Gypsy, Roma and Traveller Awareness

Eligibility Criteria

This programme is open to people and organisations based in the North East and North Cumbria, as well as those from the following organisations:

  • NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)
  • NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC)
  • NIHR Innovation Observatory (IO)
  • NIHR Research Support Service (RSS)
  • NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU)
  • NIHR Research Delivery Network (RDN)
  • NIHR HRC in Diagnostic and Technology Evaluation (HRC)

Course Description

Do you know the difference between Travelling communities?

Do know the correct terminologies to use?

Do you know their barriers to accessing health services?

If not, then join us for a unique awareness seminar facilitated by Richard O’Neill a leading health campaigner and Romani elder. This session provides an in-depth and unique perspective on some of the most marginalised and misunderstood communities in Europe. Richard will provide historical, cultural and lived experience knowledge and examples of good practice in order to help those embarking on research projects with Travelling communities.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand Cultural Nuances: Demonstrate a clear understanding of the cultural issues pertinent to Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
  2. Identify Barriers: Explain and recognise the challenges these communities face in accessing services and the differences in their experiences.
  3. Apply Best Practices: Explore and discuss examples of successful approaches to improving communication and building effective research relationships with these communities.
  4. Increase Confidence: Feel more confident in working effectively with Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller communities.
