Course Description

An interactive session on winning research funding by weaving patient and public involvement (PPI) into your proposal like a pro. Learn how to turn funder-speak into real-world impact, impress reviewers, and build meaningful partnerships that go beyond the tick-box.

Developed and delivered by researchers and a public contributor, this session will explore PPI in the context of research funding applications. We will look at the content and purpose of a funding application, and funder expectations about patient and public involvement in both the development and content of the application. We will discuss frameworks and services that can support PPI in funding applications and some of the challenges and common pitfalls. We will talk about different ways in which patients and the public might be involved in the development of a funding application and outline some real life examples of this. There will be an opportunity for discussion.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the purpose of a research funding application and usual funder expectations around patient and public involvement
  2. Know about frameworks and services that can support research teams (including public contributors) to plan and learn from PPI in the development of a funding application
  3. Learn from real-life examples of public contributions to funding applications from the perspective of researchers and public contributors
