Introduction to Electric Drives

The course offers a comprehensive introduction to electric drives, focusing on their control, setup, and configuration through various teaching styles. It covers the structures, applications, and fundamental control requirements of electric drives, along with the necessary steps for configuration. Additionally, attendees will have the opportunity to practice control methods in different laboratory sessions.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfactory completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Identify the fundamental concepts of electric drive control.
  • Recognise the applications and different types of machines.
  • Recognise the setup and configuration requirements for AC and DC drives.
  • Identify the power electronics involved in the drive.
  • Analyse different setups on the provided kits
  • Apply software control programs on different machines prototypes.
  • Evaluate and assess the performance of case examples.

    • Course Agenda

    The main topics for first four sessions are:

  • Course Structure, Definitions, Skills Needed and General Introduction.
  • Load Characteristics, Control and Sensing supported with Examples.
  • Applications and Power Electronics requirement.
  • Configuration Needed for the Machines Supported by Practical Example

    • On the second day, the four sessions will focus mainly on the below topics:

  • Hardware and Software Setup for DC-DC Back-to-Back System with Practical Verification
  • Characterization of the Induction Machine and Start-Up Transient
  • Phase Synchronous Machine Experiment
  • Encoders and Advance Topics
