Leadership in Literacy Professional Development Programme

This programme is aimed at teachers in primary and secondary schools who are responsible for leading or delivering literacy in their setting.

This programme will be delivered over two terms via 6 in-person sessions at Newcastle University.

Course Agenda

Introduction to Leadership Theory from a curriculum leadership perspective

This session will introduce the key concepts of leadership theory and examine how they can be applied in the context of effective curriculum leadership. This content will be revisited throughout the literacy sessions which follow as you consider how to deploy your learning from the programme.

Exploring the links between language and literacy

This session will explain information about key language domains for literacy and how these inform literacy development

Understanding literacy difficulties & the links to language

This session will identify the types and presentation of literacy difficulties and their language.

Examining a structured and explicit approach to literacy learning & intervention

In this session you will learn how to use and apply knowledge to design, implement and support practice that informs pupils’ literacy development

How to assess language skills

In this session we will examine how to identify the underlying process of written language deficits and profile child literacy strengths and needs

Planning for and implementing Change as a leader of literacy

In this session we will consider different implementation models and plan for introducing curriculum change in your setting.
