Course Description

Our interactive workshop - Understanding Islam and Muslims - is designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage effectively with Muslim individuals and communities. We will explore the foundations of Islamic beliefs and practices, distinguishing between faith and cultural traditions, as well as gaining an insight into the core values that shape a Muslim's life. The workshop will also include our popular myth-busting session, addressing common misconceptions surrounding Islam, such as topics pertaining to Muslim women and the hijab (female head covering). Through open and honest discussion, Q&A, and real-world examples, this workshop is designed to be a safe space to learn and explore thoughts and ideas, as well as develop practical cultural and faith literacy.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the key beliefs, practices, and values of Islam, and recognise how they differ from cultural customs.
  2. Recognise and challenge common misconceptions about Islam and Muslims, using accurate information.
  3. Apply cultural and religious-sensitivities when engaging with Muslim individuals and communities, whether it be in a personal or professional setting.
